The 2009 Grand French Victorian Banquet
Wednesday 18 March

This year’s Grand French-Victorian Banquet coincided with Melbourne’s annual Food & Wine Festival, a fitting reflection of the evening’s focus. Indeed this exclusive wine dinner showcases the trophy and gold medal winning wines from our annual Concours des Vins du Victoria, matched to a specially designed five-course menu with French influences but using the best of local produce.

This year, to support those vineyards affected by the recent bushfires, all profits from the banquet were donated to the Australian Red Cross “Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009”.

In the stylish surrounds of the River Room at Crown, overlooking the city and Yarra River views, winemakers Gilles Lapalus and Dominique Portet along with President of the Jury of the 2008 Concours des Vins du Victoria, Michel Chapoutier, guided the 130 guests through the eight wines featured on the menu.  Several of the winemakers also took turns on the stage to tell the story about their wine and their vineyard.

French chef Philippe Mouchel and Executive Chef from Crown, Marcus Werner, were behind the delectable five-course menu. As to be expected, the menu had a definite French touch, with every dish a perfect match to the wines.

All wines were unanimously praised as great examples in their respective class. The evening started with a selection of delicious morsels including grilled scallops in gazpacho shooter, smoked salmon lollypops and grilled prawns in lobster bisque, served with Delatite 2008 Riesling and Fairbank 2008 Rosé.

Once seated, guests were treated to a Box Stallion 2008 Sauvignon Blanc and Allinda 2007 Barrel Select Chardonnay, accompanied by the evening’s appetiser; a delicate seafood tower on orange and shaved fennel salad with bouillabaisse vinaigrette.

The entrée of braised duck leg in red wine sauce served with baby vegetables and chargrilled pears on a celeriac purée was a great match for the Purple Hen Estate Pinot Noir 2007, the winner of the Trophy for Best Red Wine in the Show, and was paired with a Louis Latour 2005 Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot.

Next came the Blackjack Block 6 Shiraz 2006 and Paringa Estate Shiraz 2006, served with the banquet’s main course; a veal tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto and mushroom duxelle, caper butter, walnut herb risotto, asparagus and Shiraz reduction.

The cheese course of Fromage de Meaux, olive bread and pear paste, was matched with Stumpy Gully’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2006.

Throughout the evening, guests had the chance to bid for some top Gallic drops from Burgundy and the Rhône Valley in our silent auction or indulge themselves to a glass of Condrieu, Côte Rôtie, Crozes Hermitage, Chablis 1er Cru, Meursault or Puligny Montrachet from our popular ‘Table de Dégustation’.

The dinner meandered along until the last sip of the Trophy winner in the sparkling category, a 2006 Grampians Estate Black Sunday Friends Sparkling Shiraz, which accompanied a delicious warm chocolate fondant with crushed raspberries and raspberry sorbet.

The combination of exceptional Victorian wines and culinary creations made the Grand French-Victorian Banquet yet again a memorable food and wine experience.

FACCI Victoria would like to extend its sincere thanks to the event’s major sponsor Renault, chefs Marcus Werner and Philippe Mouchel, and Crown Events for their role in ensuring the success of the evening.  The Chamber also extends a big thank you to Ian McKenzie from Blackjack Wines, Matthew Zerbe from Box Stallion Wines, Andy Browning from Delatite Winery, Lindsay McCall from Paringa Estate, Al Fencarros from Allinda, Rick Lacey from Purple Hen Wines and Wendy Zantvoort from Stumpy Gully Vineyard, as well as Michel Chapoutier, Gilles Lapalus and Dominique Portet, for their contribution to the success of the evening.

2009 FACCI Corporate Golf Day
Monday 23 March - Metropolitan Golf Club

FACCI’s annual golf day was a thoroughly relaxing day out.  It was held for the first time at The Metropolitan Golf Club, one of Australia’s premier golf courses located in Oakleigh in the renowned sand-belt area. Metropolitan enjoys a reputation as the best conditioned year round course in Australia and only a few weeks ago hosted the Women’s Australian Open Championship.

The day started with the distribution of show bags, and was followed by some practice shots and a sumptuous buffet lunch of seafood, grilled meat and healthy salads, complemented by Breton galettes and sweet crepes prepared by Breizoz Crêperie. FACCI Vice-President Rudi Koenig officially welcomed guests and the club pro briefed players prior to a shotgun start at 1.00 pm.

Despite a cool breeze, the weather conditions were fantastic and the renowned sand-belt course was in equally top form with perfect fairways and beautiful greens. Players were treated to a ‘pitstop’ at the half-way hut, with the FACCI team on hand to help players enjoy the perfect combination of French wine and cheese. In addition to the French wines, players sampled a wide range of imported French cheeses provided by Calendar Cheese Company – including Fromager des Clarines, Camembert, Brillat Savarin, Pont Lévêque, Saint Maure Caprifeuille and Tomme de Chèvre Caprinelle. The cheese platter was indeed a big hit, with many teams stopping by again at the end of their round for a final boost of energy.

Following the day’s round, players wound down with drinks served on the clubhouse lawns next to a magnificent red flowering gum, one of the many specimens of native flora for which Metropolitan is famous. Indeed the evening meal was served in the club's dining room, overlooking the beautiful flowerbeds of the championship course.

And then finally, what all the players had been waiting for, the prize ceremony. Rudi Koenig and Elisabeth Kerdelhué thanked everyone for their attendance and presented an array of prizes to the winning teams. The overall winner was the Sim Consulting Group/Chez Olivier team with a score of 55.75, while the Kenny Legal team came second, the Renault team came third, and the Alstom team led by Christophe Gourlay won the Naga Prize and took home the chocolate golf balls from Cacao.

Our annual Golf Day at The Metropolitan Golf Club was a great success as all players raved about the perfect condition of the course. The high standard of play and sportsmanship from all players made for a very enjoyable and challenging competition and we would like to thank them all for their enthusiastic participation.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of Hole Sponsors Michelin, Veolia Environmental Services, Renault, Alstom, GHD, United Group Rail and Clasquin; and Supporting Sponsors Breizoz Creperies, Cacao, Calendar Cheese Company, Pernac Paris and Lexy Group.

The jury is still out as to whether we return to Kingston Heath or remain at Metropolitan but either way, we look forward to welcoming everyone again at the Golf Day in 2010!

The Business Implications of Climate Change at Ernst & Young
Wednesday 25 March

Ernst & Young hosted a seminar on the implications of the Climate Change policies for businesses for FACCI members. The seminar was run by three members of the Ernst & Young’s Climate Change and Sustainability Services division, Frederic Papon, Manager, Richard Pittard, Executive Director and Tristan Edi, Associate Director.

The seminar focused on the key features of the Government’s proposed Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), as well as the other Climate Change related policies the Federal and State Governments have developed in regards to transport, building and appliance, clean energy resources and technologies. In particular, detailed information was provided on the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System (NGERS) and the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) and how to develop and implement a carbon strategy.

At the conclusion of the seminar, guests had the opportunity to ask further questions of the speakers and network with other guests around a cheese buffet and a glass of French wine.

FACCI Victoria would like to thank Tim Wallace and the Ernst & Young team for a very informative and well-presented seminar.

Double-pass giveaway to “A Pain in the Ass”

Francis Veber, one of the kings of French comedy, has written numerous cult films; “The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe”, “La Cage aux Folles” and “The Dinner Game”, and of course “A Pain in the Ass”, which was first directed in 1973 by Edouard Molinaro. Now with this new version he is the director, and the result is a film more lively and funny than its predecessor, with several significant changes. Richard Berry in the role of the hitman, and Patrick Timsit as François Pignon (the pain in the ass), are both irresistible.

François Pignon, completely devastated following the breakdown of his marriage, becomes involved in the world of Ralph Milan, a hitman using his hotel room as the vantage point from which he will kill a witness, about to arrive at the nearby courthouse. The result? A series of comical situations that will keep you laughing; in short, the perfect piece to entertain and help you forget your problems!

“A Pain in the Ass” will be screening at selected cinemas from April 9.

If you are interested in seeing the film, we have 10 double-passes to giveaway. Simply email your name and address to info@facci.com.au with “Pain in the Ass ticket giveaway” in the heading. Please note that the passes will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
