Le mot du Président
Jean-Michel Favre - President – FACCI South-Australia
Dear all,
FACCI SA is registering an encouraging and steady growth in membership, to the great satisfaction of its Executive Committee!
It demonstrates that in these tough economical times, networking in “good value for money” events is important for business owners and leaders.
Our recent activities, which you will learn about in this newsletter, have provided to all participants great opportunities to create new contacts and discover various types of activities. All of these are creating improved and strong economic relations between South Australia and France.
In terms of economic statistics, while South Australia is demonstrating unrivalled resilience to the downturn, France has been significantly hit. The latest figures tend to demonstrate that the worse is now behind us, with evidence of recovery.
For those who will have the business flair and courage to take that first step, there is no better time than now to start business with France.
Financial and government stimuli are beginning to have a positive effect on our economy and FACCI is here to assist you with support and the right contacts for your business! |

In July 2009, Christelle Damiens, Director of Exportia, has been appointed by the Prime Minister of France to the position of French foreign trade advisor in Australia (Conseiller du Commerce Extérieur de la France).
French Foreign Trade advisors are appointed for a period of three years by decree of the Prime Minister following the submission from the Foreign Trade Minister. For 110 years, their role has been to promote French Overseas trade, to advise the French government in this matter, to share their expertise about foreign trade notably with Enterprises Small and Medium, and to encourage international careers among young professionals. Export opportunities - July 2009 update from the DFAT “France country Brief”
Information and Communication Technology
The French market for information and telecommunications (ICT) services is growing as France adopts technological innovations as part of the EU's Lisbon Agenda to lift EU productivity. Current growth trends indicate that France will continue to be one of the world's most attractive destinations for mobile infrastructure, satellite equipment, optical fibre, telephones, pagers and internet services. Australia and France signed an agreement on cooperation in Information and Communications Technology in 2002 to encourage greater two-way trade and investment in the ICT field.
Biotechnology
France is the third-largest market in Europe in biotechnology, behind the UK and Germany. Australia's reputation in research and development has gained prominence within the EU, including France. Over 80 per cent of French biotechnology companies are involved in the health sector, with a majority of the remaining companies in the agricultural and environmental fields. Opportunities for Australian biotechnology companies include pharmaceutical discovery, development and manufacturing, with potential to initiate collaborative research partnerships, technology transfer agreements or licensing ventures.
Food & Beverage
The main opportunities for Australian exporters in the French food and beverages area are in wine, seafood, meat, game meats, fruit and vegetables, and processed food.
Indigenous Art & Crafts
French interest in Australian Indigenous arts and crafts (including fine art, handcrafts, homeware and textiles) has been growing markedly in recent years. This has been further heightened by the opening in June 2006 of the Quai Branly Museum for international Indigenous art. |

Exchange Student
Celtic Equities Management Pty Ltd, a Business Member of FACCI, recently enjoyed a membership benefit by way of employing part-time an exchange student from France’s Ecole de Management de Normandie. “Chloe was not only keen, but also had loads of common sense and a resourcefulness that was inspiring” said Mr John Rosie, director of Celtic.
The exchange student, in Adelaide for one year, created a website and company brochure in English and French, as well as studying at the local university towards her Master’s degree back in Europe. Celtic Equities Management, as a member of FACCI, was contacted by the student and the result was professional experience -qualifying hours of internship for her Masters and business benefit to Celtic with a current French speaker who had to have an excellent understanding and ability in English before she could exchange with Australia. “We would not have done this if not for being a member of FACCI.” – said Mr. Rosie. |

The Tales of Hoffmann [State Opera of South Australia 4/7/9/11 July 2009]
by Dr. C. Rothauser
This is the only opera written by Jacques Offenbach which in fact was finished after his death by Ernest Guirard.
The State Opera production came from the Sydney Opera House but the director Stuart Maunders introduced major changes in the production.
The opera was performed in French with English subtitles in the following order: Prologue, Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia’s acts and epilogue. The costumes and sets by Roger Kirk were stunning, especially for Giuletta’s act were a whole gold and black gondola made its appearance onto the revolving stage. The costumes designed to be worn during the Venice Carnival were inventive and very effective.
The First act set in Dr Spalanzani’s house worked extremely well, with dozen of animated puppets - played by the State opera chorus invading the stage – Emma Matthews who sang all the soprano roles was outstanding, She is not only a pretty woman but also an accomplished actress and her voice is one of the best I have heard in those roles.
The Australian tenor Rosario la Spina, sang Hoffmann with great gusto and acted well.
The bass baritone Douglas McNicol sang the role of the devil that appears under different disguises during the opera. He is an excellent actor, - in my humble opinion – has the best French diction and sang all the roles perfectly, especially ‘scintille diamant’ which is a killer for the voice.
The South Australian tenor Adam Goodburn stole the show with his very witty rendition of the four comic roles. The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under the director of Benjamin Northey did justice to the lively music of Offenbach but for me the star of the show was the chorus of State opera who, over the years under the guidance of their Chorus Master Timothy Sexton have become the best Opera Chorus of Australia. They can act, dance, sing and also pronounce French all at the same time, while watching the prompters off stage. |

Bastille Day Gala Diner
On the 14th July, the date when France celebrates Bastille Day by a parade of the troops on the Champs-Elysees, FACCI SA hosted its main event at the Hyatt Regency where 245 guests were greeted in a festive atmosphere for a dinner of French cuisine and a dance soiree.
A fabulous buffet style banquet was superbly presented under the direction of French/Australian chef Frédéric Broussard. and executed by his staff with absolute style. Entertainment was typically French with performances by Lisette and her Faux Manouches and renowned DJ Arnaud Benassi played a great repertoire of music, including popular French songs to entice guests to dance.
Thanks to our members and prize sponsors, lucky guests won amazing presents such as interior design items, wine & fine food products, cosmetics, lingerie, theatre tickets and French courses at the Alliance Françoise of Adelaide.
Médecin Sans Frontieres benefitted from the popular events and fund-raising was inspired by an emotive video of its work. We extend a big thankyou to our corporate sponsor Australian Motors, our supporting sponsors: Intramar, Exportia, Intimo, Polyglot and Celtic equities management, and many thanks to our partner Alliance Française of Adelaide. |
