EDITORIAL

Dear FACCI Members,

A wonderful day for a Newsletter reading! Sit back, and relax, have a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the sun shining into the space you are in. There are momentums that are coming up that are not worth missing!

April was a month of Easter and time off, and we welcome you all back to the world of French elections, information, networking opportunities with both social and more business oriented events and business support.

Holidays or not, no time to be idle: The Surry Hills walk discovery by Ms Caroline Bakerman of MySydney depicting the “Razor Story” was a first and a highlight of April taking some members through the dark streets and stories of Surry hills. The Young professionals had a party at the ZOUK and early May Ms Solenne Ducos Lamotte of IDAIA mesmerized the guests with an overall but yet detailed view of Aboriginal art in the “Australian Indigenous Art - A Creative Investment” seminar.

Further in May, we will welcome our members to the Speakers corner BYO discussion this coming Thursday at the FACCI with as central theme: Balance: Work vs Family in Australia.

May 17th the FACCI NSW AGM @4pm, preceding the Federal AGM @ 5pm will take place at Deloitte (level 9, Grosvenor Place, 225 George Street, Sydney CBD). Come and let your voice be heard on the future shaping of the FACCI NSW!

The month of May will also see the Inaugural Event for the FACCI YP take place- a Speed Networking date not to be missed by our YP – at the FICO wine Bar in Surry Hills - keep an eye out for the invitation.

In June, “Operating in Remote environments, Challenges and Solutions for the Mining Sector” kindly hosted by Clayton Utz and the Tour de France party on the last day of June are to be looked out for. Stay tuned!

You may have had the opportunity to enjoy the new FACCI ONLINE MEMBER’S DIRECTORY available since more February facilitating access to contacts within our network ensuring greater exposure of our members. Contact us at nsw@facci.com.au should you experience any trouble or are in need of support. Also , take a tour on our BRAND NEW WEBSITE and our events calendar in order to pencil down some future dates in your agenda!

Business Seminar “Operating in Remote Environments Challenges and Solutions for the Mining Sector”

Thursday 7th June - 6pm to 8.30pm

The mining sector is key to the Australian economy, with some of the world's most important mineral assets resting in our own "back yard".

Yet the remoteness and harshness of the environment in which these operations need to succeed, typically hundreds of miles away from major cities and centres of population, throws up many unique challenges for which solutions have had to be developed and adapted.

FACCI is delighted to invite you to a seminar which will focus on how the mining sector deals with the challenges of operating in remote environments and how it is tacking these through innovative solutions.

Our seminar will be moderated by Trevor Lewis (Large Projects Business Partner - Orange Business Services) and will include 4 speakers:

- John Clayton (Director - Portunus Corporate Advisory)
- Dave Hoffman (Managing Director - WEL Corporation)
- Dr Hari Gunasingham (CEO - EuTech and Sigma Sustainability Institute)
- Tony Ralph (General Manager, Industrial Market - Veolia Transdev)

WHEN Thursday 7th June, from 6pm to 8.30pm
WHERE Clayton Utz
Level 1, 15 Bligh Street,

Sydney 2000 NSW
COST YP: 15$/ticket, Members: $30/ticket, Non-Members: $45/ticket

PAST EVENTS

A walk through Surry Hills with My Sydney
Wednesday 4th April

On April 4th the FACCI NSW was proud to help organize an original event taking 20 of its members for a walk through Surry Hills’ history - a tour prepared by Caroline Bakerman of MySydney.

The 2 hour walk through the streets of Surry Hills was specked with stories of the two main gangs that dominated the streets; Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh’s murky histories came alive through the cobblestones and the stories told by Caroline Bakerman. More than just a walk into the neighborhood’s history, participants were informed of sweet architectural anecdotes and viewpoints completing the tour with a drink at FICO Wine Bar.

The visit was driven and commented by Caroline Bakerman, owner of the relocation company MySydney , an energetic and resourceful guide. Having arrived in Sydney six years ago Caroline immediately fell in love with the stunning beauty of this city, founding, six years later, her relocation company. The services of MySydney help you settle quickly and smoothly ensuring you that coming to Sydney was definitely the best choice you ever made! (www.mysydney.net.au).

We also would like to thank FICO Wine Bar and its owner Dominico for kindly welcoming us and offering us a glass of wine after the visit. We truly recommend this chic and petite wine bar, presenting a great wine list, fabulous food and friendly staff. (Fico Wine Bar, 544 Bourke Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010, 02 9699 2133)

IDAIA Seminar "Australian Indigenous Art - A Creative Investment"
Wednesday 2nd May

May 2nd we had the pleasure hold the “Australian Indigenous Art - A Creative Investment” seminar presented by Solenne Ducos Lamotte, owner and Director of IDAIA.

Solenne gave a global impression - in detail and sometimes general to address the very varied public - on where Aboriginal art is present, what the different art forms are, what each area and centre depicts and conveys, how the art centers scattered throughout Australia are organized and where this extraordinary art is collected overseas today.

Further, the presentation became a little more financial as the subject “Aboriginal art recognized as an attractive investment alternative?” was addressed.

The discussion went beyond the almost 2 hours presentation into a less official format of networking offering attendees French Wine and Cheese kindly offered by Credit Agricole.

We would like to thank Coface warm heartedly for their generous support in hosting the event in their beautiful offices!

TressCox Lawyers

Frédéric Venière, FACCI member, has set up a French desk at TressCox Lawyers, FACCI’s new member

TressCox Lawyers, a new FACCI member, joined when I moved to the firm in January this year (I personally have been a FACCI member for the past three years).

TressCox Lawyers is a highly successful, specialist law firm that has operated in Australia since 1897. With 300 people spread over Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the firm provides professional legal services to public and private sector organisations / companies and individuals in areas such as corporate and commercial law, litigation and dispute resolution, insurance, health, media and entertainment, building and construction, infrastructure, water, energy and resources and estate planning.

I joined the International Business Group of TressCox charged with the role of establishing a French desk among the existing Japanese, German and Scandinavian desks.

I am a French Avocat with a PhD in law and more than 25 years of experience in the international arena. Before migrating to Sydney with my Australian wife 4 years ago I worked for major Parisian law firms, advising clients on corporate and business law (new technology and telecommunications law, litigation drafting and negotiation of contracts for large corporations and governments). I also spent 4 years in Tahiti (French Polynesia) where I set up and managed a bureau for a prominent Parisian law firm, and more recently spent the last 3 years at a boutique Sydney law firm providing French-Australian legal solutions.

The French desk provides legal assistance to French companies operating or investing in Australia and supports Australian companies in their operations and investments in French speaking countries (e.g. France, as well as New Caledonia, French Polynesia and some African countries).

Our Sydney office is located on Level 20, 135 King Street, Sydney NSW 2000. Enquiries may be directed to me, Frédéric Venière, on 02 9228 9351 (frederic_veniere@tresscox.com.au).

Interview of Bryn Sharp, Managing Director of Lyreco

Could you please tell us more about your business?

Lyreco is a Global Leader in the supply of office products, with operations in 27 countries and world class standards in servicing our customers. Our national team looks after the needs of businesses across Australia and has done so since 1999. Our mission is to be the reference the business community turns to for office supplies solutions.

Your company is present in 27 countries. What are the specificities of the Australian market?

What makes this market different is there are 3 other main competitors, 2 being global like Lyreco and the pure size of the company and the ability to service. As an example we have 6 DC’s in Australia, the highest in the Lyreco World and with overnight deliveries to all Metro areas, this demands a very efficient logistics procedure to be in place.

• What are the keys of Lyreco’s success?

Our model is built on people and relationships. Half our Australian team is involved in sales and this is the key fundamental driver for our business. We listen to our customers and adapt our service offering to meet their requests face to face. We also pride ourselves on our product offering where we provide an order fulfillment rate which is best in class.

• What are the keys of Lyreco’s success?

Like any company growth and profitability, we never hide behind the fact that we will drive performance internally and work with our customers to get greater market share at manageable levels of sustained growth and profit, after all this is what our shareholders expect and what motivates us every day.  Located a short stroll from the beach at Brighton-Le-Sands, Larousse serves quality classic French cuisine, with professional personalised service.

It’s one of Southern Sydney’s great French restaurants and has become an icon at Brighton, having first been established in 1977, and still going strong. Larousse has an extensive clientele base, some of which have been dining at the restaurant since it first opened in 1977.

We are open for dinner Monday to Saturdays and Larousse is one of the friendliest restaurants in the area. The proprietors and staff are very welcoming and friendly and once you’re seated in the warmly lit dining room of this Sydney gem, you’ll get to explore the traditional inspired menu.

With a lavish ornate ceiling, our restaurant has a sophisticated, cosy ambience that gives one the feeling of being transported through time and place back to yesteryear France. Perfect for a romantic date, and office dinner and family get together or celebrating that special occasion.

We are family friendly and sensitive to special dietary requirements and even offer a gluten free menu for those who require one.

Even if you’ve never been to France, you’ll know that French food sits in a class of its own. Wonderful recipes, superb seasoning, creative combinations and a traditional cooking process have left French cuisine a gastronomical art form. Our delicious cuisine is cooked with passion. Read more

Orange Business Services
Addressing IT Risks for the Extended Enterprise

During the year, the Orange Business Services group hold information sessions for enterprise. At these bi-annual events in Australia, you can expect to hear from ICT industry analysts and experts who focus on key IT issues faced by enterprise today.

We will be hosting our Sydney session - Addressing IT Risks for the Extended Enterprise - and you are welcome to join us for the event.

RSVPs are essential so please contact alex.skewes@orange.com to register.

Session Overview:
Zero trust model and the extended enterprise - Forrester Research
You are part of an extended enterprise — a new extended ecosystem of customers, clouds, service providers, partners, supply chains, and empowered users. The business expects you, the security professional, to somehow magically secure this ever-expanding universe despite budget restrictions and compliance pressures. This new reality will force security professionals to realign strategies in new and more efficient ways and discard many legacy world views. This is particularly true of network security. We can no longer control the perimeter, control the number of users that must access the network, or lock down the devices that connect to the network. We must take a fundamentally new approach to network and device security.

Trusted work environment - Orange Business Services

In this session, we shall present the security solutions enterprise can adopt to mitigate the risks introduced by the extended enterprise. Solutions and services around user authentication, secure communications and mobile device security. If you are embarking on any Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), enterprise mobility initiatives, you will benefit from this session.
