Waste to Energy: the $2.5 billion infrastructure plan to turn your rubbish into energy – Friday 21 September

The French-Australian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to invite you to its second Transport & Infrastructure event of the year to discuss the urgent infrastructure challenge presented by increasing levels of landfill, and how we can adapt/adopt/leverage technology solutions that have already been tried and tested in Europe.

A significant new fund announced in this year’s Queensland state budget will be made available to private companies and local governments to contribute toward the establishment of large scale infrastructure to assist with a move towards a European model of turning household and other waste into energy.

At the same time, the Local Government Association of Queensland is developing a plan to have no waste in Queensland sent to landfill by 2028 and work has commenced in Western Australia on Australia’s first $400 million domestic waste-to-energy facility which will be designed, built and operated by a consortium that includes French company, Veolia.

To discuss the opportunity presented by waste to energy infrastructure and how to capitalise on it, we will welcome Charlie Crane, Commercial Manager - Strategic Projects at Veolia ANZ and Greg Hallam, the CEO of the Local Government Association of Queensland, who is at the forefront of the ambitious zero waste plan which will involve the construction of up to eight waste to energy facilities in Queensland prior to 2028.

    Charlie Crane
Commercial Manager - Strategic Projects, Veolia ANZ

Charlie manages strategic projects across ANZ within Veolia’s Innovation and Strategic Development group. Sitting across projects within the waste, water and energy sectors, Charlie has been intimately involved in the development of some of Australia’s first large scale, as well as small scale, Waste to Energy projects. Coming from a background of funds management and from practicing as a lawyer, Charlie looks at the challenges facing the development of waste to energy solutions through a regulatory and financial lens in the belief that the technology required has been, and continues to be, deployed overseas. Charlie is passionate about developing the market in Australia for waste to energy as an environmentally sustainable solution to landfill disposal and a key part of the solution to developing a true circular economy in Australia.
