The inaugural Concours des Vins du NSW 2013 awards ceremony and tasting took place on the 13th of June with a total of 287 wines submitted from 56 wineries from all over NSW, in 13 different categories. Over 500 winemakers, FACCI members and guests attended the event held at Doltone House on Darling Island Wharf, Pyrmont.
This was the first year that Le Concours des Vins has been held in New South Wales, and with the Victorian FACCI setting the standards high for over 20 years, the event exceeded our expectations and was a resounding success. This flagship event marks a strong connection between the French and Australian business communities, ‘where NSW wines meet the French palate’. The French-Australian Chamber of Commerce NSW Chapter was proud to host the event, marking the first of surely many Concours des Vins in the future.
The Concours was held in two instalments. The first was the judging session, which took place on Tuesday 4th June. Our reputable judging panel met to taste each of the 287 wines blind, before determining the medallists and trophy winners for each of the 13 categories.
Chairing the judges was Franck Moreau MS, Group Sommelier Merivale, with fellow prestigious judges Antoine Gerbelle, Grand Reporter for La Revue des Vins de France; Gilles Lapalus, Winemaker Sutton Grange Winery; Celine Rousseau, Winemaker Chalkers Crossing; Michael Engelmann MS, Wine Spectator Grand Award recipient and Head Sommelier Rockpool Bar & Grill; Florent Bouvier, Brand Ambassador Travers Wines; Pierre Durand, Senior Wine Broker Langton’s; and Christophe Rebut, Managing Director French Flair Food and Wine. An esteemed group of French wine professionals who played an integral part in the success of the competition.
Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each category, as well as trophies for the stand-out wines deemed ‘Best in Show’. Please click here to see the list of the results.
The second part of the event, held on the evening of Thursday 13th June, was however where the true appreciation of NSW wines took place. Over 500 guests comprising of winemakers, sponsors and wine-loving FACCI members were invited to Doltone House to taste the remarkable wines assembled from NSW. Accompanied by spectacular views of Darling Harbour, not only did the evening give our guests the chance to taste the quality of NSW wines, but it also contributed to the wonderful cultural connections that the FACCI establishes between France and Australia.
The event would not have been the success that it was without the participation of the wineries and the judges. We therefore wish to extend our deepest thanks to all 56 wineries who entered in the competition, as well as our magnificent team of judges, led by Franck Moreau.
The FACCI would like to extend its sincere thanks to all our sponsors, without whom the event could not have taken place. Particular thanks go to our corporate sponsors, SDV, Renault, and Jurlique, as well as our supporting sponsors, Orange Business Services, Colorpak and Arc International. Deepest thanks also to our participating organisations, event partners, media sponsors, and product sponsors.
A final thank you to the wonderful teams at both the Sydney Convention Centre and Doltone House for hosting the event.
