The government's decision to scrap the 457 visa has caused concern in French and American business communities with a recent survey indicating that an overwhelming majority (79 per cent) of members view the changes as having a major impact on their ability to bring the best talent to Australia.
In a survey of 80 businesses covering over 60,000 employees in Australia, members of FACCI (French Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and AmCham (American Chamber of Commerce in Australia) revealed a feeling of frustration at the disruption caused by the changes and the lack of consultations by the Turnbull government.
Members of both American and French business communities felt that changes were unjust particularly as it also changes the rules for people who are already here, with 96 per cent of respondents having invested heavily in job creation and upskilling their Australian workforces as well.
Frank Ribuot, President NSW of the the French Australian Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Randstad Australia said, “There is genuine concern here. Our members have invested in Australia by bringing their business, their skills and often their families here. Having put down roots in Australia, our members understand the rationale behind the changes but are keen to work with the government so that the right people are targeted in the new visa regime and that Australia, and their businesses, do not suffer from an talent attraction disadvantage. We must avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”
With two thirds of the respondents having 457 visa holders within senior management, the survey also revealed a sense that for certain job categories, the lack of permanent residency availability will mean that sought after talent may pick another country - and that the lack ability to transfer key personnel may result in a decline in investment as well well global business competitiveness for companies operating in Australia.
