At 25 years old, Christian Bonne, a young Parisian in search of adventure, decided to leave France for New Caledonia. 20 years on, Christian’s adventurous nature led him in search of a new venture: becoming a baker. Several years of trial and error followed, before he finally succeeded in achieving his dream.
2016. Aged 50, Christian moves to Australia and opens a bakery in February 2017. La Vie & Belle was born. La Vie & Belle, a typically French bakery or boulangerie, situated in a charming street in Surry Hills, offers a wide range of viennoiseries and pastries, baguettes and other mouth-watering French delights.
The boulangerie itself has a very authentic French feel. Christian tells us: “We thought of all the decoration ourselves. We wanted to add our own personal touch and we think it really shows. Our customers come in and find themselves in a real French bakery. It’s also really important to display our products in an aesthetically pleasing, authentic way”
And it works. The boulangerie already boasts a small but loyal following of local customers, and is becoming increasingly known in Syndey, by young, old, French-speakers and Aussies alike.
“People want us to do well and we can feel it” Christian adds. “Australians come here because they’re looking for bread that tastes a bit different. They want their bread fresh and crusty. They want to discover different flavours. From our point of view, we’re trying to bring a bit of human kindness, to share a bit of warmth and happiness with people. A smile costs nothing, but gives much. We do what we do because we love it.”
The equipment, as well as the raw ingredients are all imported directly from France, to maintain that high-quality French standard. Once again, Christian and his wife focus firmly on that original, authentic French feel. From the flour to make bread to the butter for viennoiseries - everything is made in France!
At La Vie & Belle you won’t just find traditional baguettes, but also wholemeal pain complet, pain campagne or French sourdough and traditional fougasse. Christian makes a great selection of pastries, including the ever-popular croissants and pain au chocolat, classic French palmiers, chocolate twists and brioche. For those with a sweet-tooth, you can choose between apple and pear tartlets depending on the season, Parisian flan, chocolate fondants and more. In short, there is something for everyone!
