Valrhona Logo

Valrhona, a pioneer and leader in the world of chocolate, is a partner to taste artisans since 1922.

At Valrhona, chocolate is at the heart of everything they do. Chocolate is a creation, a gift, a social engagement, an expertise, a source of knowledge, a profession, and an inspiration. Their French savoir-faire has a global influence.

In fact, the Ecole Valrhona for training programs in chocolaterie and patisserie has campuses not only in Tain l'Hermitage (the original Valrhona factory location) but also in Paris, Tokyo, and Brooklyn: their reputation of excellence is international.

Valrhona's core mission is carried out by their sourcing team, which selects the most unique cocoa varieties and forges long-term relationships with producers. This collaborative approach has allowed Valrhona to constantly enrich its knowledge of cocoa and even become a producer in certain plantations.

In 2020, Valrhona obtained B Corporation certification. By joining the B Corp® movement, Valrhona reaffirmed its determination to create a model which would impact positively on people and the planet.

Their cocoa strategy is evolving to this day, and it is structured around their three fundamental principles:

  • improving the living and working conditions of farmers,
  • protecting the environment
  • preserving the soil and flavors.

Improving conditions in schools and communities' health and hygiene are major focus areas that improve their relationships on the ground, as are protecting forest areas and reducing carbon emissions.

Strengthening their ambition to share knowledge around chocolate with all, Valrhona opened the Cité du Chocolat in 2013. The Cité du Chocolat has an educational mission to pass on a love of good chocolate to generations of all ages, in a center that unveils a whole new world to the general public.

And on the company website, you can also find a section named "Inspiring You" with Professional or Gourmet Recipes, along with pastries for all tastes and cookbooks. These initiatives confirm Valrhona's 360 coverage of the chocolate world, offering a service, product, or educational opportunity to anyone who visits them.

Last but not least, Valrhona is a reference of quality for professionals, with a laboratory range and kitchen accessories and regular customers with degustation boxes and easy recipes.

You can find their chocolate bonbons around the world and in Australia with their official resellers.

A little bit of History:

  • In 1922, Albéric Guironnet, a pastry maker and confectioner based in Ardèche, founded the Chocolaterie du Vivarais in a former woodshop in Tain l’Hermitage.

  • In 1939, when Albéric Guironnet died, the business went to Albert Gonnet. He decided to rename the company “La Chocolaterie Gonnet”, and he expanded the workshop so he could diversify the range of chocolate he sold.

  • In 1947, Albert Gonnet created the brand “Valrhôna”, which was short for “Vallée du Rhône” (or Rhone Valley).

  • In 1989, L’École du Grand Chocolat was founded in Tain l’Hermitage. It enabled Valrhona to share its expertise with makers and chefs. As a center of excellence for chocolate, L’École Valrhona has become a real hub of creativity and innovation.

  • In 1992, Valrhona became a producer of the El Pedregal plantation, one of the world’s heartlands for luxury cocoa, including the rare Porcelana variety.

  • In 2013, Valrhona’s Cité du Chocolat first opened its doors, right next door to the historic Guironnet chocolate factory.

  • In 2019, Valrhona Launched an avant-garde eco-responsible initiative named “La Consigne”, rethinking their current packaging.

  • In 2020, Valrhona obtained B Corporation certification. By joining the B Corp® movement, Valrhona reaffirmed its determination to create a model which would impact positively on people and the planet.

  • In 2022, to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Valrhona launch the KOMUNTU chocolate. Komuntu, whose name is a combination of “Komunumo” (meaning “community” in Esperanto) and “Ubuntu” (an African concept which means “I am what I am because of who we all are”), is a chocolate created for you, by you.
