How QLD SMEs Can Leverage Free Government Cybersecurity Support: Insights from Cyberon
Cyberon shares how Australian SMEs can access free government-backed cybersecurity tools to boost resilience and meet national standards.
In today’s business landscape, cybersecurity isn’t just an IT issue – it's a core business risk. That’s why the Government, aligned with its 2023-2030Australian Cyber Security Strategy, is offering free cybersecurity tools, training, and certification opportunities to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) strengthen their digital resilience.
As part of this initiative, SMEs now access free Silver Level SMB1001 Cyber Security Certification, developed in alignment with the CyberCert Australia program. This certification is part of a wider strategy to help SMEs meet nationally recognised cyber readiness standards - with no cost at the Silver level for eligible participants.
What’s on Offer for SMEs?
Through partnerships with industry leaders like Cyber Wardens and CyberCert MSPs, the Government is supporting:
- Free access to baseline cybersecurity certifications (Bronze tier)
- Self-assessment tools and practical control checklists
- Cyber Wardens training, designed for easy integration into the workplace
- Recognition of your cyber posture, boosting trust with partners and clients
- Free upgrade to Siver, available to businesses who activate Bronze quickly
These resources aim to help SMEs:
- Reduce their exposure to cyber risks
- Build resilience within their supply chains
- Improve their chances of winning contracts with cyber-aware credentials
- Meet supplier requirements of CPS230 for APRA regulated enterprises (effective from 1 July 2025)
Why Certification Matters
Small businesses are increasingly being targeted by cybercriminals, often due to weak defences or lack of awareness. By adopting even basic protections – such as strong passwords, access controls, and backup systems – businesses can significantly lower their risk of a cyber incident.
The SMB1001 Silver Certification helps your business:
- Meet national cyber safety standards
- Enhance credibility with clients, suppliers, and insurers
- Demonstrate due diligence in data protection and operational risk management
- Automatically qualifies you for cyber insurance should you need it
