White Paper - Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare in Australia
Abstract
See how Artificial Intelligence is unlocking new possibilities for healthcare in Australia — transforming the way care is delivered and experienced.
Summary
Australia stands at an inflection point in healthcare. The convergence of artificial intelligence, data-driven innovation, and patient-centred care is reshaping every aspect of the healthcare system, from hospital workflows to preventive medicine. For policymakers and industry leaders alike, the challenge is no longer whether to integrate AI into clinical practice but how to do so responsibly, securely, and sustainably.
On 20 August 2025, the French-Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FACCI), supported by the Economic Department of the French Embassy, organised a roundtable in Sydney to discuss these issues. Bringing together senior executives from the medtech and pharmaceutical sectors and legal experts from Baker McKenzie, the session explored the rapidly evolving regulatory framework, and the governance of sensitive health data.
This discussion comes at a timely moment, with recent developments in the Australian healthcare landscape. Indeed, over the past few months, there have been reports from Government consultations on the use of AI in the health sector, privacy decisions on the sharing of clinical data to train AI models, press coverage and opinion pieces on the impact of AI in GP surgeries, and a new vision emerging around the regulation of privacy and intellectual property to facilitate the expansion of AI in Australia.
Drawing on the insights from the roundtable discussion and recent regulatory developments[1], this white paper explores three key themes:
(i) The evolving regulatory context around AI;
(ii) The specific challenges and tensions AI creates for healthcare data; and
(iii) The opportunities for Franco-Australian cooperation and strategic directions for stakeholders.
It concludes with some recommendations to enable safe and ethical innovation.
