Christopher GygesGovernment Spokesperson, Minister for the Economy, Foreign Trade and Energy

Born in New Caledonia, Mr Gyges moved to mainland France for his tertiary education to get 2 Master’s degree in applied economics and corporate finance. On his return, he worked briefly for a bank before holding key positions as advisor then chief of staff for the Government and the Congress of New Caledonia.

Mr Gyges is passionate about politics. He belongs to a local anti-independence party and is also a member of the current national presidential party. He was first elected in May 2019 both for the Southern Province and the Congress of New Caledonia.

Mr Gyges became member of the Government in 2017 and was reconducted in 2019. Apart from being the spokesperson of the Government of New Caledonia, his portfolio encompasses Foreign Trade, Taxation, Energy, Economic Recovery measures, the Digital Economy, Marine Economy, Ageing and Solidarity policies.

  • 2008 – 2009 : Research Analyst at the IEOM (France’s Issuing Institute For Overseas Territories).
  • 2009 – 2011 : Staff Member to the Minister for Public Service, Government of New Caledonia.
  • 2011 – 2014 : Advisor to the Minister for Taxation, the Budget, Energy, the Digital Economy and Audiovisual Communications, Government of New Caledonia.
  • 2014 – 2015 : Chief of Staff, Government of New Caledonia.
  • 2015 – 2017 : Chief of Staff, Congress of New Caledonia.
  • 2017 – 2019 : New Caledonia’s Minister for Social Welfare, Families, Solidarity, Disability, and the Youth Judiciary Protection.
  • 2019 : Government Spokesperson, Minister for the Economy and Economic Recovery Measures, Foreign Trade, Taxation, Energy, the Digital Economy, the Economy of the Sea, Ageing and Solidarity Policies.
