Resources and the Renewables hedge – Tuesday 14 August

The  French-Australian Chamber of Commerce Queensland Chapter is pleased to invite you to its second Energy & Resources event of the year dedicated to the role of renewables in the future of the Australian resources sector on Tuesday 14 August.

In the Australian market there is often a misconception that Australia (in particular Queensland) needs to decide whether it will be a resource mining nation or a nation which adopts renewable and low carbon energy generation.  However, not only can a renewable energy sector not exist without the resources mined in Australia (iron ore and coking coal for the steel in a wind turbine for example) but the resources sector generally can improve efficiencies, cut costs and in some cases, external project life by adopting renewable and other low carbon energy generation into its operations.

The key role renewables has to play in the Australian resources sector has been identified by numerous private companies such as Rio Tinto and its Weipa Solar Farm, Sandfire Resources, as well as Neoen Australia and the solar plant at the De Grussa copper-gold mine 900 km north of Perth. Public bodies such as ARENA are also backing this relationship, by identifying key areas when renewables can be integrated into resource projects such as opportunities for offsetting diesel and using renewable energy in the refining process.

This event will be the opportunity to discuss how resource companies can hedge themselves by embracing renewable and low carbon energy generation, and how these often opposing sectors are deeply connected (for everyone’s benefit).

The event will include a light buffet breakfast kindly provided by our host and Corporate member,
McCullough Robertson.
