City of Unley upgrades to a Small Business Membership
The City of Unley is an inner-southern region of Adelaide, South Australia.
The City of Unley is an inner-southern region of Adelaide in South Australia. Main roads that traverse its suburbs contain a diverse range of retail precincts, including Goodwood, Unley and King William Roads. All are renowned for popular restaurants, bars, quality food outlets and designer fashion boutiques, along with shops offering art, handicrafts and original souvenirs.
In 2023, two establishments on Unley Road - ‘The Cremorne’ and ‘Dolly’ - were voted Best Hotel and Best Restaurant in Australia, while Goodwood Road’s ‘Good Gilbert’ achieved the title of Best Wine Bar in the nation.
Unley is home to many other successful small to medium sized business along other transit routes, including Fullarton Road in Highgate and Duthy Street.
The City also has an active, recently-redeveloped hub with high-tech features catering for start-ups and emerging business operators, which is currently home to over thirty small businesses.
Prior to colonisation, Unley was home to the Aboriginal Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. European settlement began in the mid-19th century, with arrivals initially from the British Isles.
The City of Unley recognises that the Kaurna people are the traditional owners and custodians of the land that now comprises Unley. Unley Council is committed to an ongoing process of reconciliation with First Nations peoples and recognises the historical and environmental significance of Kaurna sites within the City.
Unley was proclaimed - a City in 1906 as a result of its population reaching 22,000. the region is thought to have been named after the family-name of the wife of Thomas Whistler, an early settler who bought the land around 1857.
The current Mayor of the City of Unley is Michael Hewitson AM. Unley Council is working on a range of environmental initiatives to improve the City, including the preservation of its tree canopy and green spaces. The Council is committed to lowering carbon emissions and employing smarter methods to create a sustainable environment in order to maintain and enhance the urban environment and to strengthen the City’s resilience to climate change.
Proud of their rich creative traditions, practices, and aspirations in arts and culture which reflect, and shape their community’s identity, the Cultural Plan 2021-2026 outlines Council’s commitment to cultural development.

Helping to create a strong sense of belonging and community, Unley Life magazine shares news about the community and business sector and provides information about the Council's plans, programs and activities, and the benefits these have for their residents of all ages. Council’s Living Young newsletter provides opportunities for young people to lead and learn, to connect with others in their community, and promotes wellbeing and resilience for this age group.
