Melbourne Metro Project reached 50%

Two tunnel boring machines have broken through key sections of Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project!

Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), Millie and Meg, have broken through key sections of Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project, reaching the half-way mark of tunnelling on our ground-breaking project.

TBM Meg broke through at the Parkville Station site on Saturday, less than 24 hours after TBM Millie completed its journey from Anzac Station to South Yarra.

The dual breakthroughs mark a major milestone, with 50% of the tunnelling now completed.

The TBMs have so far excavated more than 364,000 cubic metres of rock and soil and installed more than 30,000 individual concrete segments, each weighing 4.5 tonnes, to line the tunnel walls.

Jacinta Allan, Minister for Transport Infrastructure said:

“To reach the halfway mark of tunnelling and to have two major breakthroughs in successive days just shows how hard crews have been working to keep building major infrastructure Victorians will benefit from.”

“We thank all the workers who have been adhering to health and safety guidelines to make sure we can continue this fantastic project.”

“The Metro Tunnel Project is just one of the pipeline of major projects that will continue to drive our economy and create jobs as we rebuild in the coming months and years.”
